73 Sqn. Walking Club was founded by Dick Jarvis to try and
encourage Air Training Corps Squadrons and other youth groups to take part in
distance walking in the Cambridge Area where he lives. Having taken cadets
down to take part in the Spitfire Walk near Folkestone and seen the numbers of
cadets from all the services, taking part and enjoying themselves, he decided
to organise a similar event in the Cambridge area which could draw on support
from similar groups within the middle of the country.
The BWF promotes walks up to 43km in length so the club was
registered with them. This also meant that it would be advertised in the BWF calendar
and also the IVV International calendar.
The Club organises one event a year. This event is the
Pathfinder Walk and is held on August Bank Holiday Monday each year. The year
2009 will see the 12th running of this event.
Dick Jarvis is also the Chairman of 73(Huntingdon) Sqn. Air
Training Corps from which the name of the walking club comes. Members of the
squadron committee help Dick in the running of the Club and any profits from
the event go towards the running of the ATC Squadron.
